Batting Technique - Watching the Ball

Why do we tell players to watch the ball?

As coaches one of the first things we tell a player when they miss the ball is "Watch the ball".

This is an obvious statement because if you are not watching the ball when trying to hit it, chances of missing it are high.
So striking the ball is one reason and the other reason is to be able to read it out of the bowlers hand, judging the line and length of the delivery along with the type of delivery will give the batsman a heads up of what is coming and this generally means that they appear to have more time to play their shots.

Head Still Eyes Level

Have you ever tried looking down the wicket and judging a ball with your head tilted at an angle or watch a delivery bowled at you whilst bobbing up and down?

The results are generally not good. I use the analogy of trying to read a book with your head tilted to one side or whilst a passenger driving along a bumpy road.

Everything is clearer and judgement a lot easier if you keep your head still and your eyes level. Sometimes this can be rectified by looking at how the player is standing in their stance.
